Frequently Asked Questions about Coglapest®

.

QUESTION 1: If my Coglapest® vaccine does not turn to pink after reconstitution, is there any risk to use it?

This lack of color change means your diluent would have a too low pH that may destroy the Thiverval strain.

You can inject the reconstituted vaccine provided you use it rapidly after reconstitution.

You should change your diluent to prepare the following vaccines.

QUESTION 2: Is there any risk of transplacental contamination if I vaccinate my sows during pregnancy?

If you use a vaccine based on a solid strain non sufficiently attenuated, the risk of transpacental infection is high.

To limit the risk of immunotolerance, it is recommended to vaccinate the sows in the last third of pregnancy.

Thiverval strain is a cold and fragile strain. Thus the use of Coglapest® at any stage of pregnancy is completely safe.

QUESTION 3: To reduce my vaccination cost, I use Coglapest® on breeders and a Chinese Lapinized strain on piglets.

This program is indeed cost efficient but it is risky in terms of efficacy in endemic areas or uncontrolled epidemiological situation.

If you break the virus spreading from your breeders, you may maintain a horizontal spreading of virus in finishers that will create sub-clinical or chronic forms.

These non spectacular forms are the most damaging for your long term profitability.

QUESTION 4: I don’t use Coglapest® in my farm because it does not cover Asian strains. I prefer a local vaccine based on local strains.

This popular belief is wrong. It is clearly demonstrated there is only one antigenic group of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) virus.

The 3 genogroups based on molecular composition of glycoproteines would explain the difference of field strains virulence.

Thus Coglapest® is fully recommended to control CSF in Asia. Besides it is the CSF vaccine leader in industrial swine farms in Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam.

QUESTION 5: How can I monitor my vaccination program to be sure my farm is protected against CSF?

Serology can be helpful to monitor a farm as the CSF antibody titer is positively correlated to protection.

Tests like SeroNeutralization Titer or Elisa blocking Antibodies can inform you on your farm protection.

At least 75 to 80% of your finishers should show a SN Titer at minimum 1:4 to be fully protected.

QUESTION 6: How can I differentiate a circulation of wild virus in my farm when I vaccinate with Coglapest®?

Coglapest® comes with a specific marker. Unfortunately no commercial kits are yet available to check it.

In farms applying a correct vaccination program and controlling CSF at herd level, it is possible to use an ELISA kit to check the presence of CSF Antigens.

On animals sampled minimum 2 weeks after the last vaccination round, a positive result means a wild virus presence.

QUESTION 7: I have already experienced few cases of post-vaccinal reaction (reddening) when I was using Coglapest® in my farm?

Coglapest® is really safe and does not provoke any post-vaccinal reaction (PVR). The described individual cases are anaphylactic shock that may occur at any time with all vaccines.

You could reduce their incidence by checking your vaccination handling. Are you sure your diluent is not too cold before injection? Are you using the right needle size? …

QUESTION 8: I use Coglapest® to vaccinate my boars. Is there any impact on their fertility and semen quality?

It is really important not to forget boars vaccination as semen is reported to be involved in CSF virus spreading.

Coglapest® does not provoke any fever and thus does not affect the semen quality.

A vaccinated boar can be collected few days after Coglapest® vaccination.

QUESTION 9: Sometimes, the cake does not dissolve rapidly when I reconstitute Coglapest®.

This is not a problem of quality! We just use a special substrate to keep the vaccinal virus in optimal condition along the shelf life of our product.

This concern appears when the diluent is too cold. You can warm the diluent into your hand or remove it from the fridge 1-2 hours before use.

Caution: Keep always the cake between +2°C and +8°C until reconstitution!

.

QUESTION 10: How long after its reconstitution can I use Coglapest® vaccine with optimal efficacy?

Some studies conducted in Thailand have shown the Thiverval strain can survive at ambient temperature several hours after reconstitution.

For optimal efficacy (high immunity stimulation for the best protection) it is recommended to inject the vaccine within 1 hour (2 hours maximum!!!) after its preparation.

.

QUESTION 11: How can I treat animals already infected with CSF to limit losses?

There is no treatment against CSF. You can apply some symptomatic treatment (anti-infectives against diarrhoea or coughing). It could protect animals from secondary infections but will not save animals showing acute symptoms.

The best is to re-vaccinate your farm with Coglapest® as soon as possible (protection in 3 to 7 days) to strongly reduce transmission of virulent virus from one pig to another.

.

QUESTION 12: What should I do in case of outbreak?

The best attitude is to practice an emergency vaccination. Re-vaccinate ALL your animals ASAP to confine the outbreak and to break pig-to-pig transmission of CSF.

Coglapest® is the vaccine of choice : with a full and high protection in 3 to 7 days, it strongly reduces transmission of virulent virus from one pig to another.

.

QUESTION 13: Can I vaccinate my suckling piglets with Coglapest® at 1-day old?

Yes, the Thiverval strain is fully safe to be used at day 1.

However, keep in mind the immune system of neonates is not mature at this age and the vaccination is 90% ineffective.

Do not forget to re-vaccinate your piglets after weaning!

.

QUESTION 14: What is the right timing to apply the 1st shot of Coglapest® in piglets?

The right timing depends of the level of Maternal Derived Antibodies (MDA) that can vary from farms to farms according to the vaccination program on sows, the prevalence of the disease…

Ideally recommended at 5-6 weeks of age, it can be brought forward according to the local conditions.

Serology can be helpful to determine the MDA breakdown and the right timing.
