Amoxicillin acts by inhibiting mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall.
Amoxicillin has a time-dependant bactericidal activity against Gram positive germs such as Staphylococci, Streptococci, Corynebacteria, Clostridium, Erysipelothrix and Gram negative germs such as E. coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella and pasteurella-like germs, Bordetella, Actinobacillus, Haemophilus, Bacillus anthracis, Moraxella, Proteus mirabilis.
After Amoxicillin is widely and rapidly distributed in tissues and well vascularised organs. The pulmonary tropism is important. Amoxicillin is poorly metabolised. It is largely eliminated by the kidneys into the urine under its active form.
Acting at a very early stage on micro-organisms in their active multiplication phase, Amoxicillin is recommended for acute disease as first intention treatment.
